To My Congressional Representative:

Re: HR 503 -- Please co-sponsor the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act!
Horses have been an integral part of American life for more than two centuries, from the famous night of Paul Revere's ride through Secretariat's simultaneous appearance on the covers of Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated; from helping farmers plow their fields to delivering the mail.

When horses have finished their service, should they be brutally slaughtered for human consumption overseas?

Americans are shocked to learn that three foreign-owned companies in the United States, two operating in Texas despite a state law forbidding their operation, continue to slaughter horses daily. These horses are frequently transported to the slaughterhouses in deplorable conditions.

Their lives are not ended humanely by euthanasia, rather with a captive bolt gun. Not every horse is killed with one shot.

There is no need for these horses to be slaughtered; only the greed of people making a living out of this American disgrace.

The only answer is to shut these plants down and the only way to do that is through legislation. Recently, H.R. 503 was introduced in Congress to stop the hideous, needless suffering of our horses at foreign owned slaughterhouses. The legislation will prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling or giving away any horse, burro or mule to be slaughtered for human consumption overseas or other purposes.

I believe the slaughter of horses in the United States for human consumption overseas should be stopped immediately.
I respectfully ask that you co-sponsor HR 503, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.
